Analysis of Magazine Contents Pages

Contents Page Two

Urban Music Based

Colours*

What mood/impression do the colours create?

This contents page shown above sets a very different mood and impression aside from other typical magazine content pages. To start with the image is taken over by the text and they are dressed in sexy summery clothes. The background of the contents page is a grey fade to white and this makes the models seem 3D, as there is also a light shade of shadows behind them. The text is all in black and this also is set apart from the way the models are dressed as they have colourful clothes on and this very unique for a magazine contents page to be set out like this.

Design*

How do the words and images fit together?

What fonts and styles of letterings have been used, and what do they suggest?

There is not many designs shown on this contents page but this is meant to be the design, plain and clear for readers to get straight to the point. It is also attracting a specific target audience to be more attracted to the well known popular urban music artists shown, and less on the text even though this is very important. The words and images do not fit together as they are set apart from each other because they are separated so it’s clear to read once again.

The main heading is split down as CO-NTEN-TS rather than CONTENTS and this is because they use this on all contents page for this specific magazine and this sets the representation of magazine apart from other magazines so it can be known just by the way the heading has been used and the fonts.  The title is bold and black.

The other text on the left hand side of the ‘models’ have headings above smaller pieces of text which guide readers to different pages of the magazines. The headings above are represented as headings because they are in a different font and it seems to be bigger and clear to what the pages will be about in different sections.

Images*

Who or what is featured, and what does it represent to their specific audience?

The images featured on the contents page is of two well known urban music artists standing together and this represents an attraction from the specific target audience to want to read the magazine if there ‘idol’ and music artists who they are interested will be mentioned inside. This is also done so that they can understand what the magazine is about and what type of stuff will be advertised and talked about. The way they are dressed also attracts a specific audience because many people of this target audience are interested in dressing this way and also the fashion side of urban music-by-music artists.

Pose, style of hair, make-up*

The poses shown by the two music artists on this contents page are dressed ‘sexy’ and ‘sassy’. This involves them into the contents page and it makes the images seem much more important to represent the magazine than the text. The images also attract the specific target audience to see from a distance and to know what type of magazine it is and what it will be about inside.

By having two popular, unique music artists posing side by side with extreme accessories, hairstyles and makeup attracts the audience to want to read the articles and understand clearly the genre of music there is. The way they are posing with the background also makes the music artists have a 3d effect and this makes the contents page much more realistic and interesting for readers. The music artist on the left has long hair with a stylish dress and is not overly dressed whereas the music artist on the right has long hair also but is dressed less like the other music artist, such as her clothing and makeup is different and more overt to be seen from a distance and attracts the specific target audience that the magazine aims for.

How are the words used on the cover?

The contents page show above does not have much detail concerning text, but has enough to locate readers where to look for particular articles they are looking for inside to read. The main heading is Contents, which is bold, and easy to read, it is also not very large so it does not take up the whole cover of the contents page and focuses much more on the music artists and text on the side. This also adjusts well with the page so it does not clash and is not boring for the reader. The colour of the heading and all text is all in black, but some have different fonts, which separates different stories or headings away from each other. There are not many patterns, as the image is the main side to be seen of the contents page. The text is easy to read as the background has a plain and clear colouring.

All these points attract the specific target audience to buy and know what they will be reading easily once purchased.

Size and layout- are they big enough to be read from a distance?

The size and layout of the contents page within this magazine are large and presentable for all different readers, it is eye-catching also and can be seen clearly and easily from a distance.

Language*

How does it address the reader and grab his/her attention?

What language features can you identify?

The ways that the magazine is addressed to the target audience is done by the short headings and text, which follow through to the magazine. The heading and text is not long or hard to read which then attracts the audience because it is easy to read without difficulty in understanding or reading the text.

Overall impression*

Does it have a good indication of what is inside?

The overall impression of this contents page is for many points shown on the magazine, which I have explained above. Overall there are fashion statements made attached to the type of music it suits with and is very unique, set apart from many other contents pages in other magazine and also attracts girls and women who are interested in R n B, Hip Hop and Urban Music.
